If you have out-of-town family arriving in early August, this is the weekend to hold. If you do not, plan groceries and errands around it and let the Highway 84 traffic move without you.

Get there closer to 9 a.m. than to noon.

- Wild Finch for contemporary American, walkable from downtown lodging and open at the Springs Resort's Thursday market.

- Riff Raff Brewing Company for a burger and a local pour when you want the room, not the reservation.
- Rosie's Pizzeria and Two Chicks and a Hippie for casual weeknight fallbacks.

A volunteer-run, free, laser-guided constellation tour followed by telescope viewing, meeting near the restroom at Yamaguchi Park. Bring a red-light flashlight or headlamp if you have one. Arrive on time so your eyes have room to adjust, and layer up because it gets cold once the sun is fully down. Late July and August give you the best combination of warm evening temperatures at the start of the session and dark skies by the finish.
Dive-In Movies At The Springs Resort
A movie screened at dusk over the Blue Lagoon pool with the pools open for the show. This is one of the few late-summer routines that gets the geothermal water working for you at exactly the right time of day, and it is far easier to get into during a random August weeknight than during peak Fair or Colorfest weekends.
The One August Date To Block Off
If the Fair is the anchor for the last weekend of July, August's anchor is smaller and more specific. On Thursday August 21, from 6 to 8 p.m., The Springs Resort courtyard hosts a Meet and Greet for a PSAC-sponsored artist showcase, with 20 of the 29 participating artists on hand the night before the show opens.
